Hi everyone 🖐️. Greetings to you from England, United Kingdom 🇬🇧. I was hoping someone might be able to explain. I was in a discussion with a polite, zealous and knowledgable individual from a religion called the Assemblies of Yahweh (Bethel PA). They use the Hebrew Name Yahweh and not Jehovah. I know we tend to conflate the two terms and say Jehovah is how to pronounce the Name in English, but Yahweh is how you say the Name in Hebrew. However, they explained that is faulty reasoning and pointed to transliteration - bringing the sounds across - and the obvious English letters in the Name Yahweh, that this is how to pronounce the Name in English.
I looked in some Jehovah Witness material and I found the explanation that Yahweh is the most accurate pronunciation but Jehovah is preferred because it’s more popular.
That’s fair enough, but since the Almighty only has one Name and the 144,000 have the Name written on their foreheads and many scriptures allude to one correct Name to be used for salvation, shouldn’t we use the accurate pronunciation Yahweh? We will after all be judged by the standard of truth. It just changes the whole Bible. Putting in the correct Yahweh, Joel 2:32 would read:
“And it shall come to pass, that whoever shall call on the name of Yahweh shall be delivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those that escape, as Yahweh has said, and among the remnant those whom Yahweh does call.”
What should I do?

There is some very strong evidence that Jehovah is the correct rendering because of the Names that bear witness to Jehovah's Name within them. For example you used a Scripture from Joel. Why use a scripture from Joel which means 'Jehovah is God.'The very ones whom make the faulty claim about the letter 'J' would have to remove Names that refer and bear witness to Jehovah. - Jesus when translated means 'Jehovah is Salvation'
- John when translated means 'Jehovah has been Gracious'
- Matthew when translated means 'Gift of Jehovah'
We read “I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you on the way and to bring you into the place that I have prepared. Pay attention to him, and obey his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgressions, because my name is in him." ( Exodus 23:20-21) Yahwists have taken the extreme position that Jehovah is not ever used in the Greek. But is that accurate? I have found some interesting details. Take for instance the word Hallelujah when translated means 'Praise Jah' which is short for 'Praise Jehovah'.- After these things I heard something like the loud sound of a great crowd in heaven saying, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, (Rev 19:1 LEB)
- The Greek word used is actually ◄ 239. hallélouia ►
- Strong's Concordance
hallélouia: hallelujah, alleluia (an adoring exclamation)
Original Word: Ἁλληλούϊα
Part of Speech: Hebrew Form (Indclinable)
Transliteration: hallélouia
Phonetic Spelling: (al-lay-loo'-ee-ah)
Definition: hallelujah, alleluia (an adoring exclamation)
Usage: Hallelujah, Praise the Lord..
HELPS Word-studies
239 allēlouia – literally, "praise Yahweh, transliterated hallelujah" (BAGD). [" 'Alleluia,' without the initial 'H,' is actually a misspelling" (Vine, Unger, White, NT, 287).]
The divine name appears in its abbreviated form in the Christian Greek Scriptures. At Revelation 19:1, 3, 4, 6, the divine name is embedded in the word “Hallelujah.” This comes from a Hebrew expression that literally means “Praise Jah.” “Jah” is a contraction of the name Jehovah. Many names used in the Christian Greek Scriptures were derived from the divine name. In fact, reference works explain that Jesus’ own name means “Jehovah Is Salvation.”

Hi Borondo. Thank you for your explanation, but I’m still trying to get my head round this, so bear with me. Jehovah Witnesses have said and I quote “While inclining to view the pronunciation ‘Yahweh’ as the more correct way, we have retained Jehovah because of people’s familiarity with it since the 14th century”. This was over 50 years ago appearing in JW literature. Why then did we keep our name and not rather name ourselves Yahweh’s witnesses? You mention the name Joel but this would be pronounced Yo’el in Hebrew and it means Yahweh is El according to Bible Study Tools, abarim-publications and even Wikipedia. The scriptures says “15 Give diligence to present yourself approved…a workman that needs not be ashamed, handling properly the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15) The Assemblies of Yahweh also use the Hebrew name for the Messiah Yahshua which means Yahweh (Yah) is salvation (Shua). I’ve been questioning the term Jesus too as surely we should not use a Greek spelling of the term Iesous (which was only an attempted transliteration from the original) from which, through the Latin Iesus, comes the English spelling Jesus. “Jesus” has been corrupted because it was derived from a foreign, second generation attempt to transliterate the original word for the Messiah. Like you said, this would be YHWH or Yahweh is salvation which is Yahshua. I mean I’m considering Acts 4:12 that shows that not only should we use the accurate name for the Father, but also the Son. The Messiah said he would send the Spirit in his Name. You mention John, but I think in doing so you are being a bit misleading. The word John is derived from the Hebrew Yohanan. Just because it has the first letter as a J in English, doesn’t mean it supports Jehovah. The word John means ‘Yahweh has been gracious’ [Chisholm, Hugh, ed. (1911). “John” Encloypaedia Britannica (11th edition.) Cambridge University Press. HalleluYah means ‘Hallel’ (praise) and Yah (Yahweh). The abbreviated version of the name Yahweh is Yah. Sorry, I just feel that I need to really consider my worship. I don’t want to get to the great white throne Judgement and be told I got it wrong and that my zeal, like Paul’s was before his conversion, was misplaced. I want to worship the Father in Spirit and in truth (John 4:23) because He deserves that much. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

God only has one name. It's spelled and pronounced differently amongst the thousands of different transliterations of languages. Nobody today knows the proper pronunciation of the tetragrammaton. To make the claim one language is better than the other is not a valid reason. Why? Both forms are English transliterations which Yahwists claim the English Language is inferior. There are NO ENGLISH LETTERS at all in the Hebrew language, it's called script or characters. To claim such a strong stance leaves you no room to use English at all. Unless, your hanging your faith the letter "J" only. This of course doesn't jive when the same ones that denounce the letter 'J' then in the same sentence use the English transliterations of John, Joel, Jerusalem. It's rather a hypocritical expression. Even Jesus spoke Greek and he did not denounce the language. Most use Yeshua which means Yahweh is Salvation but each language has it's own spelling. You stated, "I’ve been questioning the term Jesus too as surely we should not use a Greek spelling of the term Iesous (which was only an attempted transliteration from the original) from which, through the Latin Iesus, comes the English spelling Jesus." Again, Jesus did not denounce the Greek language so why are you? Who left you to be Judge and Jury?? - Iesous when translated mean Ιεχώβα is Salvation
Jehovah's Witnesses speak many languages. Otherwise, how would the World get the Good News about God's Kingdom? Did you not read the Book of Acts and see what happened at Pentecost?
And tongues as if of fire became visible to them and were distributed, and one came to rest on each one of them, and they all became filled with holy spirit and started to speak in different languages, just as the spirit enabled them to speak. ( Acts 2:3-4) So when this sound occurred, a crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Indeed, they were utterly amazed and said: “See here, all these who are speaking are Gal·i·leʹans, are they not? How is it, then, that each one of us is hearing his own native language? Parʹthi·ans, Medes, and Eʹlam·ites, the inhabitants of Mes·o·po·taʹmi·a, Ju·deʹa and Cap·pa·doʹci·a, Ponʹtus and the province of Asia, Phrygʹi·a and Pam·phylʹi·a, Egypt and the regions of Libʹy·a near Cy·reʹne, sojourners from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Creʹtans, and Arabians— we hear them speaking in our languages about the magnificent things of God.” ( Acts 2:6-11) Read the Bible in Hebrew if you like... Notice how Jehovah's Witnesses is rendered in Hebrew? Visit JW.org Christian Bible is in over 120 (tongues) and over 1,080 languages of Bible Literature. "Keep Conquering the Evil" (Romans 12:21)
